Position Overview:
Our client is seeking an accomplished and visionary Senior Combustion Device Engineer to lead the development of thrust chambers and combustion devices for multiple state-of-the-art propulsion systems. This role sits at the heart of the Propulsion department, driving the design and optimization of critical hardware for next-generation aerospike and full-flow staged combustion engines, as well as supporting in-space propulsion programs. Working in close collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams, including Systems, Turbopump, Feed System, CFD, and Mechanical, this position offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to the development of Europe’s future high-thrust rocket engines and advanced space transportation technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership:
● Lead the design, analysis, and optimization of thrust chambers and combustion devices for advanced aerospike and full-flow staged combustion engines.
● Support the design and development of thrust chambers for in-space propulsion systems.
● Ensure that all combustion device designs meet demanding performance, reliability, and safety standards.
● Oversee testing and validation activities, analyze results, and drive continuous design improvements.
● Stay at the forefront of industry advancements to integrate innovative technologies into next-generation propulsion hardware.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
● Work closely with the Combustion Devices team within the Propulsion department.
● Collaborate with Systems, Turbopump, Feed System, CFD, and Mechanical Engineering teams to ensure seamless system integration and functionality.
● Drive a collaborative culture that fosters knowledge sharing, innovation, and high technical standards across disciplines.
Program & Project Management:
● Manage project timelines, resources, and budgets to ensure the successful delivery of thrust chamber development milestones.
● Conduct regular progress reviews and report to key stakeholders on project status and performance.
● Implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance thrust chamber performance and operational efficiency.
● Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and rigorous documentation protocols.
Qualifications:
● Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
● Minimum of 15 years’ experience in thrust chamber or rocket engine development.
● Deep expertise in thrust chamber design, analysis, and performance optimization for liquid rocket engines.
● Strong technical knowledge of aerospike and full-flow staged combustion propulsion systems.
● Proficiency with advanced simulation tools (CFD, FEA) for fluid dynamics and structural analysis.
● Proven experience managing high-thrust engine development projects from concept through validation.
● Solid understanding of systems engineering for complex hardware systems.
● Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams, manage budgets and resources, and deliver on ambitious timelines.
● Flexible, solution-focused mindset with the ability to adapt to evolving program requirements.
● Excellent problem-solving and communication skills to coordinate across diverse technical functions.
Bonus:
● Master’s or Ph.D. in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.
● Prior involvement in major European space propulsion programs.
● Knowledge of advanced materials and manufacturing techniques for combustion devices.
● Experience working with cryogenic propellants.
● Fluent English; additional proficiency in Spanish and/or French is a plus.
● Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to delivering robust, reliable designs.
● Proven ability to mentor and guide junior engineers and foster technical excellence within the team.
